Where timeless coastal luxury meets laid-back California charm
La Jolla is San Diego’s crown jewel: an elegant yet laid-back coastal village perched on rugged cliffs with panoramic ocean views you just don’t get anywhere else. Picture Mediterranean revival homes, winding streets lined with boutiques and art galleries, surfers catching waves below multi-million dollar estates, and sea lions sunbathing at the Cove like they own the place. The atmosphere here is an eclectic blend of immense wealth and relaxed, artsy, surf-town energy that feels authentically San Diego. Spend a day here and you’ll see why locals stay for generations.
La Valencia Hotel: This iconic pink gem has been a staple of La Jolla since 1926. Grab breakfast on the patio with sweeping ocean views. Extra special for me because I got married here. Timeless.
Birch Aquarium: Perfect for families or anyone who loves marine life. Incredible ocean views and fascinating exhibits make it a must-see.
La Jolla Cove: Swim with the seals and sea lions, snorkel the underwater park, or just watch the sun dip behind the cliffs.
Children’s Pool: A beautiful little beach protected by a seawall. The seals and sea lions call it home, so be respectful and give them plenty of space.
Kayaking the Sea Caves: Book a local guided tour and paddle into the caves carved into the sandstone bluffs.
The Cave Store: Climb down a century-old tunnel through the cliffs into Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave. Quirky, historic, and pure La Jolla.
Sunset at Ellen Browning Scripps Park: Bring a blanket and watch the sun melt into the Pacific.
The Lot: The only movie theater I’ll go to. Upscale, plush seating, dinner-and-drinks service, and always a good vibe.
La Jolla Concours d’Elegance: A luxury car show that turns the coastline into a parade of classics and exotics each spring.
Open Aire Farmers Market: Sunday staple for fresh flowers, local produce, and artisan bites with a view.
Windansea Beach: Iconic surf break, beautiful rocky coastline, and fewer crowds than most La Jolla beaches.
Marine Street Beach: Locals love this wide stretch for its soft sand and clear water. Best for strong swimmers. The waves pack a punch.
La Jolla Shores: Probably the most family-friendly with gentle waves, easy parking, and kayak rentals right there. Always worth it.
Bird Rock Tide Pools: Rugged and great for exploring at low tide. Feels like your own little adventure.
Children’s Pool: Not your classic swim spot but if you want to see the seals up close, this is the place. Keep a respectful distance.
Parakeet Café: Bright, stylish, and consistently good. Great coffee, healthy bites, and a neighborhood vibe.
Pinpoint Café (UCSD-Scripps location): Small but the views of the ocean and pier are unbeatable. Grab your latte and watch the waves roll in.
Encanto Café: Modern feel, great coffee, and pastries that hold their own.
Parisien Gourmandises: Tucked inside a local boutique, this is one of my personal go-to spots in San Diego. Their delicious and creative pastries bring an authentic touch of Paris to San Diego, so every croissant and pastry hits different.
Lilli’s: This little café has been a La Jolla institution since I was a kid. The new owners have kept its old charm alive with great pastry and coffee.
Immersion Café: This spot is small but always worth it for the coffee and cookies.
Marisi: One of my favorite restaurants in San Diego and easily one of the most beautiful. The pasta is phenomenal and their weekend brunch has my favorite cinnamon roll in the city.
Georges at the Cove: A La Jolla institution. Grab a rooftop table, order fresh seafood, and take in that sunset.
Marine Room: Dinner here is unforgettable. Waves literally crash against the windows while you dine.
Puesto: A taste of Mexico City street food with a modern twist. Tacos and margaritas never miss.
Queenstown: Casual and lively with New Zealand-inspired eats.
Cody’s La Jolla: One of the best ocean-view breakfast spots. Always feels like a vacation morning.
Himitsu and Shiku: Two standouts for phenomenal sushi. Fresh, creative, and worth every bite.
The Cottage: An iconic La Jolla brunch classic. Stuffed French toast, benedicts, and good vibes.
Sugar and Scribe: Local favorite for a decadent brunch served all day long. Their pastries and breakfast plates feel like a celebration.
Shorehouse Kitchen: Great spot for a laid-back breakfast after a beach walk.
Blue Whale: Cozy café feel with great coffee and killer brunch staples.
The Whaling Bar: The iconic bar inside La Valencia, newly reopened and as timeless as ever for a cocktail with a story.
La Valencia Hotel: Grab a craft cocktail on the hotel terrace and soak up that ocean breeze.
Herringbone La Jolla: Oysters, cocktails, and live music in a beautiful space.
Prospect Street and Girard Avenue: Where you’ll find everything from designer labels to unique local boutiques. Wander through art galleries, coastal home décor shops, and one-of-a-kind jewelry stores. It’s refined but never stuffy. Classic La Jolla.
La Jolla Sports Club: Your upscale neighborhood gym with boutique classes and friendly regulars.
Lifetime Fitness: High-end amenities, luxe locker rooms, and every class under the sun.
Balanced Fitness and Health: Smaller, community-focused, and great if you want a more personalized vibe.
Yoga on the Beach: Sunrise or sunset flows on the sand with an ocean soundtrack.
Surf Diva: Legendary surf school at La Jolla Shores. Perfect for beginners or anyone leveling up their skills.
Breakfast at La Valencia: Ocean breezes and timeless charm. There’s no better way to start the day.
Kayak the sea caves: Adventure meets romance.
Dinner with the waves at Marine Room: A must for that wow factor.
Pastry run at Parisian Gourmandise: Grab fresh croissants then wander down to the Cove.
Sushi at Himitsu or Shiku: An intimate night that feels special but never stuffy.
Catch a movie at The Lot: The only theater I’ll go to. Plush seating, cocktails, and no bad seats.

It’s the kind of place where the best properties often change hands quietly — local knowledge and relationships matter just as much as budget when you’re talking about legacy homes and once-in-a-generation listings.
