San Diego’s legendary coastline for laid-back luxury and epic sunsets
Sunset Cliffs is that rugged stretch of coastline locals brag about but secretly wish would stay a little under the radar. It’s dramatic ocean bluffs, surf breaks, hidden tide pools, and sunsets that make you pause mid-conversation. This pocket feels raw and real, a little beachy, a little bohemian, with million-dollar ocean views that pull in everyone from surfers to professionals wanting that daily dose of salty air. Whether you’re catching golden hour with friends or sneaking away for a solo sunset surf session, Sunset Cliffs hits every note if you crave a laid-back, ocean-driven lifestyle.
Keep in mind Sunset Cliffs itself is mainly residential, so the majority of my favorite restaurants, coffee shops, and spots to hang are technically in Ocean Beach right next door — you’ll see some overlap in my OB guide too.
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park: The obvious icon, but worth every visit. Walk the coastal trail, scramble down to a tide pool, or just grab your coffee and sit on the bluffs.
Tide Pool Exploring: At low tide, locals venture down hidden paths to discover little ocean worlds tucked into the rocks.
Sunset Surf Sessions: Surfing here isn’t for the faint-hearted, but if you’re comfortable, it’s one of the best places to catch a wave with an unbeatable backdrop.
Osprey Street Stairs: One of the more secluded cliff spots. Pack a blanket, grab a burrito, and watch the sun melt into the Pacific.
Garbage Beach: Don’t let the name fool you. This tucked-away surf spot is a local favorite, with a hidden path and epic tide pools at low tide.
No Surf Beach: Mostly a locals’ spot you’ll need to hike down a cliffside to reach. It’s quiet and scenic but not the best pick for families with young kids because of the steep access.
Sunset Cliffs Boulevard Overlook: Park anywhere along the boulevard, stroll the edge, and pick your perfect perch to catch the show.
OB Beans Coffee Roasters: A local gem roasting ethically sourced beans, perfect for a pour-over before a cliff walk.
The Nest: A cozy, eclectic, plant-filled corner for your morning espresso. If you’re local, you’ll run into your neighbors here at least once a week.
Spill the Beans: Locals swear by the coffee and bagel combo. Grab a seat and plan your day on the cliffs.
OB Noodle House: A staple with two spots in OB, famous for killer pho, garlic wings, and strong drinks.
Azucar: An insanely good Cuban bakery with some of the best pastries and coffee around.
Olive Tree Market: Grab a legendary deli sandwich and some local craft beer to take to the cliffs.
Poma’s Italian Deli: A locals’ favorite for massive, satisfying sandwiches. My personal go-to when I’m craving a sub.
Pizza Port Ocean Beach: Laid-back vibe with solid pizza, wings, and their own local brews on tap.
Dirty Birds OB: Big, delicious wings in every flavor you can imagine. Perfect for game day with friends.
Nico’s Mexican Food: One of the best spots in San Diego for an authentic, no-frills Cali burrito.
The Joint: Sushi meets tapas in a laid-back OB spot that feels both fun and sophisticated, great for date night after sunset.
Lighthouse Ice Cream: Don’t leave without trying their famous waffle ice cream sandwiches. It’s a must after a sunset walk.
Scoops Ice Cream: Local favorite for when you want a simple cone and that classic small-town beach vibe.
An’s Gelato: Tucked inside An’s Electronic Repair shop, this place has been named best gelato in the nation by USA Today. It’s a true San Diego-only gem.
OB Brewery: Rooftop views over Newport Avenue with a craft beer in hand, one of the best spots to kick back.
OB Wild Ales: One of my personal favorite local breweries, known for funky, unique small-batch beers.
Belching Beaver Brewery: Chill, dog-friendly, and always pouring something fun and fresh.
The Third Corner Wine Shop & Bistro: Sip wine, shop wine, bring a bottle home. It’s all good here.
Sunset Cliffs keeps it mostly residential, but Ocean Beach is your backyard for surf shops, vintage finds, records, beachy home décor, and indie boutiques. It’s got that easy local charm that makes weekend wandering so fun.
Sunset Yoga: Join an outdoor yoga class right on the cliffs. Nothing beats sun salutations with an ocean breeze and the sound of crashing waves.
Pilgrimage of the Heart Yoga: A warm, welcoming studio in OB for when you want an indoor flow with a local community vibe.
Performance 360: Probably the best functional fitness gym space in the area. Locals love it for the community vibe and solid programming.
OB Surf & Skate: Rent a board, grab any surf gear you need, and hit the waves. This place is a staple for OB locals.
Golden Hour Picnic: Grab charcuterie and a bottle of wine, find your perfect perch, and soak up that unbeatable sunset.
Surf & Smoothie Date: Early morning surf session, then hit The Nest or Spill the Beans for smoothies and bagels.
Brewery Hopping: Spend a casual evening hopping between OB’s best local breweries. Bring friends or make new ones.
Tide Pool Stroll: Explore hidden tide pools when the tide’s low and see just how magical this coastline really is.
Sunset Cliffs is all about the views and the lifestyle. Coastal cottages, Spanish bungalows, and modern luxury rebuilds perch right above the bluffs. Locals love it for the privacy, epic ocean views, and that daily surfer’s dream vibe. Homes here are always in demand and often change hands quietly, so having an inside track is key if you want to wake up to crashing waves every morning.
